The Return of Chia Seeds

August 1, 2010

Remember my love affair with chia seeds last year? I was sprinkling them in and on everything I ate, but for the last several months, I kind of forgot about those little powerhouse seeds. So, while packing for our trip, I threw a bag of them in my backpack and decided to bring back an old favorite while staying in Michigan: Protein Chia Oats.

Protein Chia Oats with TJ’s Unsalted Crunchy Peanut Butter

I’d forgotten how yummy and filling this recipe is – you must try it if you haven’t done so already! You can click here for the recipe, and you can easily sub rolled oats for the oat bran which is what I did this morning. Speaking of chia seeds, I order mine from Chia Seeds Direct, and the company is currently offering discounts on some of their larger bags of chia seeds. You guys know I try and avoid Internet food purchases, but trust me, chia seeds are a much better deal when ordered online. My Whole Foods charges $20 a pound, and they’re only $25 for 2 pounds (includes priority mail shipping) at Chia Seeds Direct, and no, the company does not pay me to tell you this. πŸ™‚

Tomorrow, the workouts from Lindsey, my online personal trainer, begin. Lindsey was kind enough to design a month of workouts tailored specifically to me and the HEABlet…and I think they’re going to kick my pregnant booty! I packed my dumbbells and an exercise ball, and I can’t wait to get started. To all of you out there who won my personal training giveaway, you must keep me posted on how you’re doing. Yay, we can get our butts kicked together!

Some photos from out trip thus far…This lakefront is less than a 5 minute walk from the house we rented…

Chris taking Einstein for a swim. Isn’t my hubby so cute? πŸ˜‰

Oh, and I did mention that I did NOT bring my Vita-Mix?!? I normally tote that thing along on all of our vacations lasting more than a week, but I decided to see what life is like without my beloved blender. Do you think I’ll survive? Wait, before you answer that, guess what else is located within walking distance of where we’re staying…

IMG_5561.JPG

Yes, that says 24 flavors of soft serve available, and yes, I’m kind of regretting not having the Vita with me now. Oh well, if I can’t have protein ice-cream in my life, The Dairy Bar just might be my new best friend. πŸ˜‰

Hope all of you had a wonderful weekend!

You are too cute! Carrying that blender with you…I think the HEABlet will enjoy the softserve! Your oats look delicious! I haven’t tried chia yet. I keep putting it off, but I know I should. I think I am the last blogger out there to not have tried them! Have a great night and enjoy every minute of your time away!

  2. August 1, 2010 4:46 pm

I always feel like I need a toothpick after eating something with chia seeds. Not a huge fan because of that.

  3. August 1, 2010 4:47 pm

I always forget about my chia seeds too! I won a lb of chia from Averie’s giveaway and I think it’s safe to say I’m set for life. I also *just* got some new protein powder so I’ll have to give your brekkie a shot!

    Have a lovely night πŸ˜€

  4. August 1, 2010 4:58 pm

Good luck with the new workout. How great to have someone design a plan just for you and the Heablet.

Oh my, I’d go crazy – 24 flavors of soft serve? Count me in! I love the picture of Chris and Einstein – too cute πŸ™‚ Have a great time, Heather, and PLEASE eat some soft serve for me πŸ˜‰

The lake looks nice! All those flavors are amazing! I do not think I have ever seen so many at one place!

Looks like your trip is going great : )

I won the Lindsey workouts!! YEA!! So I get to workout with you, the HEABlet and all the others…cannot wait to start in the morning. Yes, it is going to be butt kicking…whew. Hey, where are you guys staying?? You know I’m from Michigan…and have traveled all over the state…just wondering what lake and such. Maybe I can give you some great eating tips up there…sure hope it is cooler there than in TN…another record 90 something week..blah!

  12. August 1, 2010 6:22 pm

Mmm tasty. Those oats look deliciously pudding-like which means I would seriously dig them.

  13. August 1, 2010 6:25 pm

I go on random chia kicks then forget about them, but they are definitely one of my fav little superfoods. I’m going to have to make that breakfast ASAP. Yum!!

I hope you and the HEABlet enjoy your workouts. I’m excited to see how she kicks your butt. πŸ™‚

I recently bough 18 pounds of chia seeds from chia direct, which ended up being $5 a pound for them! (going to split it with some friends who’ve I’ve converted to chia love by making them almond chia pudding)

  15. August 1, 2010 6:26 pm

I hope you have a fabulous trip!!! And I can’t wait to hear what Lindsey has up her sleeve for you. πŸ™‚

  16. August 1, 2010 6:27 pm

I think there is a reason for everything – for you leaving that cooler behind and for leaving the Vita-Mix.

And that reason is that dairy ice-cream shop …;)

Still having a hard time with the binging . The worst is that it’s continuously on foods that even sicken me , and thenI regret so much and just wish I hadn’t…bu I hope my time will come. Because bad sugary cakes every evening are not the answer 😦

    And, yes, Chris is HOT!

  17. August 1, 2010 6:40 pm

It’s good to learn to live without the vita mix on vacation…pretty soon you’ll have a lot of baby gear and not enough room for a hefty blender!

Please do inform us of the 24 flavors!

  18. August 1, 2010 6:47 pm

I literally just squealed with delight reading this; you are super close to the tiny little town I was born in; Grayling, MI, Crawford County. Driven through that area so many times. You are also close to Grand Traverse Bay — if you go at the right time, you will see the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Okay, I’ll stop giving you my advice. I am just really excited because I know you are going to have the most wonderful Baby Moon ever. Oh, and if you get a chance, try Blue Moon and/or Moose Tracks ice cream — northern MI is known for these flavors.

Haha how ironic that you didn’t bring it and there’s an ice cream place nearby. πŸ™‚ Maybe it was fate! Sometimes it’s good to be without a loved appliance for a while, just to remember that life still goes on without it, and not too badly. πŸ˜‰

  20. August 1, 2010 7:48 pm

I dearly love my chia seeds and put them in and on everything! I also miss Michigan. Enjoy!

  21. August 1, 2010 7:48 pm

I’ve loved chia seeds since I won two pounds from you πŸ™‚

I also LOVE Michigan (all my family lives there) and I’m heading to Michigan on Saturday to visit my grandparents who live on a lake too. Where in the UP are you? My great aunt lives on Lake Superior near Sault Ste Marie. If you get a chance get out Mackinac (pronounced Makinaw) Island. There are no cars allowed-it’s such a quaint beautiful town. There’s the Grand Hotel where Somewhere In Time (Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves) was filmed πŸ™‚

  22. August 1, 2010 7:54 pm

Looks like you’re having a fun trip so far! How nice that you are so close to the lake! I really need to try some chia seeds. I hope you survive without your vitamix πŸ™‚

  23. August 1, 2010 8:29 pm

welcome back chia seeds! and not bringing the Vita…for a month, I would say I would have especially if I was driving. I almost brought the thing to Aruba! for 3+ weeks but didnt want to deal w/ customs, it possibly being damaged on the trip, voltage issues, so it stays home. When I get back every year, it just makes me fall in love with it all over again. Absence makes the heart grow fonder πŸ™‚

And I am doing Lindsey’s workouts…but need to really get on that, asap! I am in my own little world and need to get going on what she’s recommending..thanks for the reminder!

  24. August 1, 2010 8:31 pm

Chia seeds are awesome. I love them.

I HIGHLY recommend pepitas as a pine nut subsitute. Sarma Melngailis, who owns Pure Food & Wine in NYC, actually replaced a lot of the pine nuts in her recipes with pepitas because for some reason pine nuts are costing a king’s ransom right now. If the slight tanginess is gone, maybe add some nooch?

Hope the soft serve treats you well!

Oh, speaking of pregancy and workouts, you should check out Cassandra Forsythe–she is the badass of prenatal workouts. She was actually benchpressing the day she delivered! Not saying you should, of course, but it’s neat to read about how she didn’t let pregancy slow her down.

Oh that Dairy Bar would be so dangerous for me! Especially in walking distance πŸ˜‰

Your chia oats remind me of a tofu-rice-pudding my Dad made last week while I visited. All he did was cook brown rice and while it was hot, he added vanilla silken tofu and chopped dates. It all melted together and was super creamy and delicious!

  29. August 2, 2010 12:12 am

I’ve never tried chia seeds, but I keep meaning to. I’ll have to check out that website. =)

Oh my gosh 24 flavors of soft-serve? That sounds like heaven to me. πŸ˜€

  30. August 2, 2010 6:14 am

I love crazy flavors of soft serve. So much better than hard ice cream!!

  31. August 2, 2010 7:03 am

Mmm oats. I had oats this morning. I kinda want to make more now. Hm.

I love the homemade soft serve πŸ˜€

  32. August 2, 2010 7:17 am

Have fun! Ice cream shops within walking distance are dangerous, but at least you’re walking to it. Totally burns off the calories πŸ˜‰

  33. August 2, 2010 7:23 am

Heather I hope you know how inspiring your blog is — I am not pregnant (but hope to be one day) and I love reading about your experience with pregnancy — from what you eat to how you exercise. It honestly gives me hope that one day I too can have a good experience with pregnancy and I can remain healthy (with a few indulgences here and there).

    Enjoy the soft serve!

  34. August 2, 2010 8:44 am

Evan, When I’m at home, I usually grind up my chia sees in either the Vita-Mix or my Magic Bullet before using them. That way, you still get the thickening/fluff factor without getting the seeds stuck in your teeth. πŸ™‚

  35. August 2, 2010 8:49 am

Couchpotato, Thanks so much, and just so you know, I used to have your same fears. If I can do this whole pregnancy thing, then anyone can…trust me! πŸ™‚

  36. August 2, 2010 8:50 am

    Sweetersalt, My thoughts exactly! πŸ™‚

  37. August 2, 2010 8:51 am

Randi, Nope, not even a gym membership required. Lindsey will work with whatever equipment you have available. For me, that’s an exercise ball and a set of dumbbells. πŸ™‚

  38. August 2, 2010 8:52 am

Mimi, So investing in a big bag of pumpkin seeds when I get back to Nashville, and thanks for the Cassandra Forsythe tip as I wasn’t familiar with her. I love getting inspired by other mamas-to-be who stayed active during their pregnancies!

  39. August 2, 2010 8:54 am

Sarah, I found out we’re actually in the LP. Oops – still lovely though! We’re staying close to Traverse City, and I’ve heard wonderful things about Mackinac Island. I hope to get up there before we leave. Have fun on your trip!

  40. August 2, 2010 8:55 am

Caronae, Please keep the MI advice coming…especially when there are ice-cream tips involved! πŸ˜‰

    Hi Heather,

I’m a newer reader, and I love love love your blog, I share so many of your food tendencies and have gotten so many new good ideas! Anyway I’ve never commented on a blog before but was totally geeked when I saw you were in MI, I live over on the east side of the state at the bottom of lake huron, I hope you have an amazing time, and Caronae was right moose tracks (sometimes called deer tracks) is really good and a perfect fit for your chocolate peanut butter cravings.

  43. August 2, 2010 3:31 pm

I would love to try chia seeds. I must buy some! They have some at the health food stores around here, but they’re way too expensive.

    Your husband is cute!

I would have an ice cream cone a day while I was there! DO IT! Have a great vacation!

  44. August 2, 2010 6:33 pm

Jenny, Thanks so much for reading my blog! πŸ™‚ We are loving Michigan thus far – what a great place to be in the summer. I love Nashville, but August is so unbearably hot there, especially this year. I can’t tell you how wonderful the cool mornings up here feel. We don’t even need AC! We have Moose Tracks in TN, but did the flavor originate in MI? I must find some and compare it to the brand they sell back at home, and you’re totally right – it’s the PERFECT answer to all of my pb/chocolate cravings. Hehe.

Thanks again for reading Jenny, and I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying yourself some HEABified eats! πŸ™‚

    Have fun! πŸ™‚

  48. August 3, 2010 9:57 am

I live about 45 minutes from there. My first banana split EVER was at that same dairy bar πŸ™‚
I’m glad you’re having a great time up here!

  49. August 3, 2010 7:10 pm

Apparently we michiganders just really have a thing for ice cream, can ya tell? And yes Moose Tracks did originate in MI, I think it was actually a riff on Mackinac Island fudge ice cream because naturally who wouldn’t want to add peanut butter to that party? Anyway also buttercup and kabocha squash are included in our local produce, but of course also sold mislabled and mixed up, I bought a michigan kabocha at meijers last week labeled as buttercup, I think anyway.

  50. August 4, 2010 1:44 pm

Kelly, Moomers – Roger that. Thx for the tip! πŸ™‚

  51. August 4, 2010 1:46 pm

Jenny, Love Michigan’s love of ice-cream. Had a Moose Tracks cone today. Why isn’t anyone making kabocha ice-cream yet?!? πŸ˜‰
