The Battle of The Chocolate Peanut Butters

July 27, 2010

First off, I just realized that I’ve been publishing all my posts set to not allow pingbacks and trackbacks. Sorry about that, but I think the problem is fixed. So, if you linked to a HEAB post or recipe, and I didn’t respond, my apologies. I’m always honored when people link back to my blog, and I like to stop by and say thanks. 🙂

Secondly, my Maranatha Nut Butter Giveaway is over, and the 3 winners are as follows:

Many congrats to Gloriousgreens, The Delicateplace, and Laura B. Please email me with your addresses, and your coupons for a jar of free nut butter will be on their way!

As promised, I did a side-by-side taste test of Justin’s Chocolate Peanut Butter vs Peanut Butter & Co.’s Dark Chocolate Dreams. OK, so I did two…had to make sure. 🙂 First up, I made two frozen chocolate peanut butter cups with each peanut butter.

I then tried half of each in a bowl of rolled oats with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Verdict: I thought I liked the taste of the Dark Chocolate Dreams better, but again, not quite sure. So, I tried both PB’s again at breakfast this morning.

Goat cheese omelet with toasted corn tortillas both smothered in chocolate peanut butter.

Justin’s gets major props for its spreadability factor, but honestly, I like Dark Chocolate Dreams more. Although both peanut butters contain the same number of sugars per serving, the DCD tastes sweeter and more chocolatey to me. Evan and Christina, you were both right: Justin’s definitely has more peanut flavor, but my sweet tooth preferred the sweeter Dark Chocolate Dreams.

Have you tried any chocolate nut butters yet? What is your favorite?

Other than Nutella, I have only ever had the PB&Co. White Chocolate Wonderful. Sadly, it didn’t last long enough to get paired with anything other than a spoon. 🙂

  2. July 27, 2010 10:34 am

Haha. The reason I like Dark Chocolate dreams is the lack of peanut taste. I will not be trying the Justin’s one. I’m obsessed with their almond butter anyways!

Oh yes, I have dabbled in the chocolate nut butters! I have not had Justin’s new brand (though I love their portable almond butters), but I think my fave is also the Dark Chocolate Dreams. It was sweet, but buttery, and well, just plain hit the spot every time!

  4. July 27, 2010 10:37 am

I’m partial to the Futter’s Nut Butters brand of ANY nut butters, chocolate or not 😀

  5. July 27, 2010 10:38 am

I have been a huge fan of DCD for years, but just jumped on the Justins bandwagon. I think I need to do a side-by-side testing!

Good idea trying twice, better safe than sorry 😉 Big props for giving Justin’s a fair shot, even though Dark Chocolate Dreams clearly has your heart.

    p.s. I feel so famous now =D

  7. July 27, 2010 10:44 am

Christina, I had to acknowledge your opinion. After all, I wanted everyone out there to know that Justin’s has some loyal fans as I really like the company. 🙂

  8. July 27, 2010 10:46 am

I’m with you, although I’ve never tried Justin’s, DCD is out of this world delicious 🙂 I’m still scared to buy it though, due to self control issues I had before 🙂

I’m afraid that even if I put it in the freezer, I will eat the whole thing thinking its even better! Maybe I should leave it in the pantry…I don’t really like it as much at room temp 🙂

  9. July 27, 2010 10:55 am

Alyssa, Yeah, the DCD is amazing frozen – melts in your mouth. Definitely dangerous! 😉

i’m eager to try Justin’s. i ❤ nutella just not all the sugar that comes with it. sooooo sweet! i did like Dark chocolate dreams but found it a little too sweet as well however MUCH better than nutella (i use the empty jar as a drinking vessel sometimes lol)

  11. July 27, 2010 11:03 am

I luuurve Dark Chocolate Dreams! I can’t say it is my favorite (only because I haven’t tried any other and have nothing to compare it to) but it’s so so yummy in my tummy! I want to try the White Chocolate Wonderful. Its best I don’t try it until after contest prep, but I have a feeling when I do, I’m gonna luuurve it too! ♥

  12. July 27, 2010 11:06 am

Hi there 🙂 Nope, I haven’t tried any chocolate nut butters, but I’m always tempted by pictures online (like yours)!! Nutella tastes way too sweet for me, so I think I would love a healthier version!

  13. July 27, 2010 11:08 am

Good of you to take one for the team and try both side by side. I would hate to have to try them both out for myself. Now, I just need to get my hands on some of each to see for myself! Hope your day is running smoothly and painting is getting done!

  14. July 27, 2010 11:09 am

I don’t know if any chocolate concoction could beat Dark Chocolate Dreams 😉 Justin’s is delicious though – I ADORE their Maple Almond Butter. So addictive.

Your breakfast looks amazing – so many sweet + savory flavors 😀

    Congrats to the winners!!

  15. July 27, 2010 11:10 am

I stick to the plain, but they all look good

  16. July 27, 2010 11:10 am

Diana, Hi! Yeah, I think you would like the Justin’s. Definitely not nearly as sweet as Nutella. Good stuff!

  17. July 27, 2010 11:11 am

Thanks SS. Hoping for no more arguments in the kitchen between contractors. 🙂

  18. July 27, 2010 11:12 am

I loooove dark chocolate dreams! I’ve also tried the chocolate variety of better’n peanut butter but I didn’t like it. It just had a funky taste/texture

  19. July 27, 2010 11:15 am

Liz, Better N PB – blech! To me, that stuff tastes like artificially sweetened plastic. DCD is soooo much better as is Justin’s!

  20. July 27, 2010 11:16 am

I’m with ya’ on the dark chocolate dreams! The white chocolate wonderful is also delish.

  21. July 27, 2010 11:18 am

Oh what a great taste-testing “problem” to have…deciding on DCD or Justin’s. I have actually never bought a “designer” PB in my life. I have been given some “higher end” PB or AB as product samples and they’ve been great, but I have never bought anything what I’d call truly decadent on my own, like some of those PB & Co flavors….I really need to get over myself$ and just buy DCD, huh!!

  22. July 27, 2010 11:19 am

Yum breakfast combos you got there to test out which one you like more! I can be a taste tester next time! lol!

I am glad to hear the DCD was the one you loved more, I love it too, never tried Justins Chocolate PB, but good to know Im not missing out that much : )

  23. July 27, 2010 11:21 am

Nutella. Nutella is heavenly. I could eat it by the jar.

  24. July 27, 2010 11:23 am

Love this comparison! Even though I don’t think I can get Justin’s in Canada. I just bought my first jar of DCD and it’s really growing on me. And also disappearing rather quickly. I have to say though, when it comes to chocolate-y spreads, Nutella will always have my heart. None of those generic chocolate hazelnut spreads either, but real Nutella. On toast 🙂

P.S. I love it when you stop by to say thanks for links. It’s a small gesture, but always a treat to see you popping up 🙂

  25. July 27, 2010 11:24 am

I’ve never tried any choc. pb other than the DCD. I love the flavor, but do wish it wasn’t as gritty. Their white chocolate one is SO creamy and spreadable. That’s the only thing I wish was different.

And nutella definitely has that smooth creaminess.

i’ve only tried peanut butter & co.’s dark chocolate dreams and white chocolate wonderful. dark chocolate dreams is my fave between the two, but right now they are both triggers for me, so i haven’t had any in a while. i hope i can get to a place where i can eat it like a normal person. i’ll be making peanut butter cups like you! 😉

  27. July 27, 2010 11:35 am

I actually prefer Justin’s, but both are good. I just bought a three pack on Amazon 😉

  28. July 27, 2010 11:50 am

I haven’t tried Justin’s chocolate peanut butter, but Justin’s chocolate almond butter is AMAZING! I have also tried PB and Co’s Dark Chocolate Dreams– and ate the whole jar in 3 weeks. Oops!

  29. July 27, 2010 11:59 am

Therese, 3 weeks?!? Gosh, it never lasts more than 1 in our house. 😉

  30. July 27, 2010 12:00 pm

I LOVE Dark Choco Dreams, but I’ve never tried Justins. I may have to do a taste test of my own! Oh the things I will do for research!

  31. July 27, 2010 12:05 pm

Couchpotato, It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it! 😉

  32. July 27, 2010 12:09 pm

I have to comment on this, mama heabz 😉

Justins chocolate almond butter & maranatha dark chocolate almond butter = my absolute favorite things in the world (or at least the fridge). Justins has the bestttt texture. And Maranatha is like frosting. Try them!

I hate peanut butter in general, haha. Love almond butter.

  33. July 27, 2010 12:13 pm

Plus side to that – DCD is usually cheaper. 😀 I’m sure Justin’s is still fabulous though.

  34. July 27, 2010 12:13 pm

Hi Amy! I have a sample of the Justin’s almond butter which I will be trying soon, and I promise to buy the Maranatha version as well…you had me at frosting. 🙂

I love anything chocolate so when a local store finally got PB&Co Dark Chocolate nut butter I had to try it. Boy was that a mistake, It’s so good I could eat the entire jar in one setting.

  36. July 27, 2010 12:23 pm

I saw some chocolate nut butters at Whole Foods the other day and now I wish I would have gotten one! Hmm, I guess I’ll just have to go back 😉

  39. July 27, 2010 1:01 pm

I love Dark Chocolate Dreams, I originally bought my first jar at Wholefoods BUT yesterday while I was in Target store, I saw that they carry the nut butters, both Dark Chocolate and White Chocolate for only $3.89. I was really surprised…since Wholefood’s sells it for much much more. Just wanted to share the good deal.

  40. July 27, 2010 1:03 pm

Lea, That is a great deal! I usually buy mine at Kroger, but it’s about $5 a jar. Will look at Target next time I’m there. Thanks. 🙂

Oh I would like to try store-bought chocolate nut butters, but they always add sugar into it, so consequently I can’t eat it 😦

But not to worry! I make my own, super easily with almond butter, cocoa powder, and if I feel in the mood for sweets: stevia

  42. July 27, 2010 1:10 pm

I’ve never tried Justin’s here in my part of Canada – haven’t seen it. But DCD – yes – it was good!! But I think I’m more used to the “Natural” nut butters now that it actually seemed to taste more artificial and sweet! …not that that’s a bad thing of course 🙂

Which is which in your pictures though? Is the Dreams the darker colored one?

  43. July 27, 2010 1:10 pm

spoonfulofsugarfree, Glad to know you make your own – wouldn’t want you to be left out. Your version sounds delicious. I love super dark chocolate, and so I know I’d love your chocolate almond butter. 🙂

  44. July 27, 2010 1:11 pm

Eatmovelove, Yes, the DCD is the darker chunkier looking one in the background.

  45. July 27, 2010 1:47 pm

I’m kind of a nut butter purist, which is just a fancy way of saying I’m boring. I like nutella, and I love peanut butter with chocolate everything. Why do I not like that stuff? I think I just think of it as plain peanut butter in a jar, and then I get a taste, and it isn’t. I’m weird like that.

  46. July 27, 2010 1:47 pm

Ah, the midafternoon munchies just hit me looking at your chocolate pB fixes…… so yummy!

I like the chocolate soynut butter by Nature’s Promise (I get it at Stop and Shop) but I think any chocolate PB combo sounds heavenly!

  47. July 27, 2010 1:49 pm

    Hey! Thanks for the comparison.
I have a question for you–I know you tried the chocolate hazelnut butter–how does it compare to Nutella? You called it Nutella in your post but I didn’t know if you thought it was better-the ingredients look a little nicer…

  48. July 27, 2010 1:53 pm

Nicole, The Justin’s is not as sweet or rich as Nutella, but yes, the ingredients are much better. I would choose Justin’s over the real Nutella any day!

  49. July 27, 2010 1:55 pm

Katie, Not weird at all. I go through my phases too where all I want is nothing but nuts. No salt or anything else added. However, I am loving on the sweet nut butters lately. DCD is what got me back into nut butters – couldn’t even look at them my first trimester, and I still can’t stand the thought of tahini. 😦

  50. July 27, 2010 2:19 pm

I have not tried a nut butter besides nutella, does that count? HAHA. All those pictures look amazing!!! YUM, anything with chocolate is good in my opinion!

  51. July 27, 2010 2:29 pm

    Pure2Raw, Nutella totally counts! 🙂

  52. July 27, 2010 2:54 pm

  56. July 27, 2010 4:10 pm

Heather – thanks to you I just received my first shipment of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter today – ripped into it immediately and tried with with some dried banana’s. I didn’t want to get carried away as I already had my afternoon snack of a homemade granola. But FABULOUS! So next stop was ordering the DCD from Peanut Butter & Co inspired by your post. Can’t wait to try that product! Love your blog and just recently found it! Thank you!

  57. July 27, 2010 4:12 pm

Have you seen Justin’s cinnamon PB? I just saw it this last Friday, and am dying to try it! I love all things cinnamon and think the PB and cinnamon combo would be an interesting one.

    Anyone try this yet?

  58. July 27, 2010 4:19 pm

Stefanie, You would probably like the Justin’s. Hope you can find some soon!

  59. July 27, 2010 4:21 pm

Monica, Yes, I’ve had it before, but only once. I remember really liking it. Thanks for the reminder – my Whole Foods is weird about Justin’s. Sometimes they stock it and other times, I can’t find it anywhere. Would love to try the cinnamon again!

Avocadonation, Yes, sooner – agreed! 😉

Ok – I think one of these days I’m going to have to try a chocolate nut butter one of these days. One of my fave sandwiches these days is sprouted grain bread, pb, honey, and sliced up strawberries. I bet that would be even better with chocolate pb! Maybe I could even skip the honey…

Eating Abroad, I use WordPress, but publish my posts using Ecto. So, for me, it was an Ecto problem. For WordPress, go to Dashboard, then settings, then discussion, and make sure the box for *Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)* is checked. Or, when you edit individual posts, just make sure that the box labeled *tracksbacks and pingbacks* under discussion is checked.

DCD is the only chocolate PB I’ve tried. I recently picked up a jar of DCD (my second one since I had to stop myself from buying a second jar but relented after I kept seeing your chocolate and PB posts). My favourite way to eat it is on slightly toasted raisin bread. I went through a $5 loaf of raisin bread in almost 3 days that way.

Dominique, I don’t know whether to apologize or say *you’re welcome*. 😉
