Need A Personal Trainer?

One of my goals during pregnancy is to stay active. I’ve definitely backed down on my activity level, but I believe it’s important to exercise for both my health and the baby’s. So, I’ve been taking at least one 90-minute vinyasa class a week and doing some prenatal yoga at home. I also try to get in a 30 to 60 minute walk most days of the week. During the first trimester, it was a good day if I even got out of bed, but now I’m feeling great and getting back into my exercise groove.

Chris and I are planning on taking a Baby-moon (as our doctor likes to call it) next month. We’ve rented a lake house, and we’re packing up the dogs and heading North for the month of August to get in some quality family time before our lives completely change come November. Anyway, since I’ll be away from my yoga studio, I decided to pack my exercise ball and a few dumbbells to help me stay in shape while we’re gone. Fortunately, my favorite personal trainer (OK, so Lindsey is the only personal trainer I’ve ever worked with, but I loved her!) has agreed to give me workouts for the entire month that we’re away. I am so grateful as Lindsey exercised throughout all three of her pregnancies, and so I feel completely comfortable with her recommendations. Thanks Lindsey!

Speaking of chocolate…wait, were we speaking of chocolate? Um, you’re reading HEAB…we’re always talking chocolate around here. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Anyway, I wanted to share my breakfast with you before I leave for my morning walk…


I used to love eating chocolate Jello-O pudding slow cooked on the stove-top and served warm with Cool Whip. This morning I HEABified and made the world’s easiest chocolate pudding: 1 can of pureed butternut squash (about 2 cups), 1 TBSP dark cocoa powder, and 1 super ripe banana whirled in the Vita-Mix until warm. I skipped the Cool Whip. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Don’t forget, the sale on reconditioned Vita-Mix blenders ends soon.

    My sister walked almost every day of her pregnancy for an hour (right up to the day she gave birth!), and she swears that it helped her keep the swelling down and get back to normal after Sophie’s birth. I think it also helped her to stay calm and (relatively) stress-free during the pregnancy, because it gave her a lot of time to think about things, you know?

    When I first joined my gym, a 20 something, cocky dude made me a very blend training and I’m bored with it. For the last month, I’ve just wandered through my gym, doing some stuff, lots of cardio … I really need a solid plan ๐Ÿ™‚

    I have to admit I didn’t even finish reading your post before going to email Lindsey! But then I finished it and now wish I had that yummy chocolate pudding (and a VitaMix). They’re made right here in Cleveland, I just found out yesterday! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Wow, that looks like a delicious and healthy breakfast.

    I tried to go on a “baby-moon”. But my hubby kept saying “after I finish working on the kitchen”. By the time we got to that point we were one month out.

    I asked the doc if I could go and he said “well, you have a PPO. So if you go into pre-term labor in San Francisco, your insurance will probably cover it…”

    Which meant “no”. So instead we drove an hour to a local secluded beach and had a long walk and a picnic (where I learned that at 8 months, don’t try to “jump” over a small stream. dummy) And my son was 2 weeks early, so the doc was smart.

    Aw, Lindsey is the best!! I love her! She certainly knows her stuff and is a great example of a healthy mommy. I’ve known her for awhile as well but have never worked with her. We have definitely had our share of support from each other though and even went through part of our last pregnancies together. I’m not surprised she is doing such an awesome giveaway.     And great idea on the babymoon. I really wish we could take one before this baby!

    I am a relatively new reader and wanted you to know I love your blog; like you, I am no longer in food and exercise jail and life is so much easier. It’s just unfortunate it took me a long time to get here.

    I’m tempted by the vitamix offer but I just am not sure I would use it very much. What are the top 5 things you make with your vitamix? I want one to make the ice cream concoctions you make but just can’t justify paying that much…

    As far as the Vita-Mix goes, I use it at least once a day if not more. I make ice-cream, smoothies, sauces, puddings, soups, hummus, blended oatmeal concoctions, etc. Love love LOVE my blender!

    Sarena, I wish we were going to Colorado as well, but my doctor was a bit concerned about the altitude. So we’re heading to Michigan instead. At least it will be a much shorter drive! ๐Ÿ™‚

    I’m not pregnant now, but I definitely hope to stay active when I am! Besides making you feel good it’s supposed to help labor/delivery go better- always a plus ๐Ÿ˜‰

    I recently had a friend with hyperemesis gravidarum (extreme morning sickness) her ENTIRE pregnancy- even had a pump with medicine in it. Despite that, she still walked every day, and is now training for a marathon with a 5 month old!

    Ohhhh, such an awesome giveaway, I emailed Lindsey already!
    The pudding looks amazingly good, such great consistency!! Does it taste “banana-y” Heather? I love the idea of the squash and chocolate, but every time I use bananas on my concoctions it always overpowers the taste. We made nutella popsicles by blending a bit of cream, whole milk, nutella and frozen banana and pouring into popsicle molds. It turned really creamy, but super banana-y, we can’t almost not taste the nutella… my first reaction was “oh no, what a waste of nutella”, but we still polished off the 4 popsicles pretty quickly!

    Ana, The pudding does taste banana-y and squashy. I don’t find the banana overpowering it all, but you could always sub something else sweet like protein powder or honey or just use 1/2 a naner. So funny about the popsicles – I would never want to miss out on the Nutella flavor either!

    hmmm yes that is officially the coolest idea ever for beakfast…. i got one for you i did the other night though…

    turnip potato cakes
    steam turnips, mash in food processor with milk/butter(like you would mashed potatoes)
    fry in skillet with butter

    serve with ketchup

    tater cakes!

    I can’t even find butternut squash where I live! It’s a travesty! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ . . . I wanted to make that fudge too. No pumpkin. No sweet potato. No butternut squash . . . I did make a chocolate avocado pudding though; that was good. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Amazing give away and BEST THING EVER is going away with CD! Omg enjoy and I only wish I had done something like that with Scott. We did go to Aruba for 3 weeks in December over the holidays and Skylar was born 5 weeks later but honestly, it was so late in my pregnancy and we go every year for 3 weeks…I was actually hot, tired, sick, and just wanted to be at home.     I think it was last summer when I was watching the Today Show and they had Joy Bauer on and someone phoned in and asked about running while pregnant.. and she said YES totally fine! even up until the very end stages its okay.. obviously much harder to do later on but then im sure ud do more walking and stretching or maybe even swimming.

    but the point she was making was that only recently women have gotten a Green Light from doctors to continue exercising.. and not only have it be okay but actually BENEFICIAL to a healthy pregnancy. but tell that to my grandma and she would say otherwise, having been brought up to sit sit sit all the time lol.

    im so happy you’ve made the choice to remain active. and as long as all is going well, all the power to ya! โค

    I used to love the fat and sugar free [aka the label has nothing pronounceable on it] jello pudding mix. I miss the taste sometimes but it was super artificial

    Thanks so much HEAB and Lindsey. I sent off an email. I could so use the help with a program. The staff at the gym I belong too never come out of their air conditioned office area. The gym itself is falling apart. AC only works in part of the gym, 3 of 7 treadmills don’t work, and the list goes on….. It makes it very difficult to keep motivated to go. As soon as my membership is up I will be switching gyms.

    It’s really nice that you and CD are getting away. My cousin just had a baby and every time mention going out or going away she always says she wishes she took one last vacation before the baby was born. Plus, you’ll be refreshed and send baby girl HEABlet good vibes, not that you don’t now!!

    Thanks, Heather & Lindsey, for this opportunity. I need to mix up my running only routine. I was spinning for a while, but then I stared school which meets the same time as my fav spinning class. So a little core, or anything other than running would be awesome. I have to tell, that I salivate most days reading your food posts – I’m not nearly so creative or adventurous in the kitchen. We miss seeing you in CO this summer, but you’ve got one heckuva good reason for staying a low altitude!

    Argh! Lindsey did this in January, when I was training for a half. Now, August is major ramp up for my Olympic Tri. Either I do too many races or it’s just bad timing, because I’d LOVE the chance to work with a personal trainer but my financial situation hasn’t allowed. Boo.

    The lake house for a month sounds like heaven! Enjoy!

    So, I couldn’t wait to try to protein ice cream. But, since I’m on Phase 1 of the South Beach diet and am limited in what I can eat, I changed the recipe just a bit. I used skim instead of almond milk (almond milk just isn’t creamy tasting enough for me) and then just threw in a teaspoon of xantham gum, some splenda, and cinnamon. It’s a little plain, and once I can eat carbs again I’ll jazz it up a bit, but it’s surprisingly delicious! I can’t wait to add protein powder to it and get even more good things out of it.

    Also, I gave almond butter another shot. I tried it once and hated it, so i was always really hesitant to pay all that $ to try it again. My local grocery store had little single serve packets of a few different kinds, so I tried those. I’m glad I did, because that creamy almond-ness is delicious! I’m so glad I tried it again. I might even try to make my own to save $.

    Best thing I ever did was making that decision to let my husband (personal trainer) train me through the pregnancy of our last baby. Usually I rather train myself, but I found through pregnancy I was very nervous, but he did great!
