I Will Not Go Deaf

April 22, 2010

This morning’s post is going to be simple and sweet just like my breakfast. 🙂

In celebration of Earth Day, I decided to go with a raw green smoothie, and into the Vita-Mix went 2 cups water, 1 large banana, 1 head of romaine, and a pinch of raw cacao powder.

Since it’s not unusual for me to use my Vita-Mix 2 to 3 times a day, CD always worries about my hearing. As amazing as this machine is, it is definitely NOT quiet. So, I’ve started wearing Chris’s noise blocking headphones whenever I blend. Seriously.

Headphones…check. Notice Einstein in the background. When he wants to go out, he just stands there with his nose stuck to the door. 🙂

This is one of my favorite summertime smoothie recipes. So refreshing!

For all those who did not win my iHerb giveaway, you can use the coupon code EME542 to receive $5 off your first order, and remember, shipping is free for all orders over $40.00.

Happy Earth Day! 🙂

So simple! I never thought to do water as the base for a smoothie… I’m going to have to try it!

  2. April 22, 2010 9:12 am

Hahaha, everytime I use the food processor or blended, my hubby gets so ticked that it is super loud!

  3. April 22, 2010 9:14 am

That’s a great idea, those machines can get super loud! Happy Earth Day!

  4. April 22, 2010 9:18 am

Just add some raw almond butter to that concoction and you have pretty much my daily smoothie (minus the lettuce – never thought of doing lettuce before).

  5. April 22, 2010 9:19 am

Bahaha….love it that you wear headphones!!! That’s actually a really good idea!

  6. April 22, 2010 9:19 am

Adam’s always whining about how loud our blender is! HA! I never thought to use headphones 🙂 LOVE the smoothie idea!
    Love you!

You are seriously one of the most practical people I “know”. :~)

No gums (xanthan, guar) in this smoothie?

Happy Earth Day to you, as well, HEAB’s.

  8. April 22, 2010 9:28 am

Scott, I thought about using the gums, but romaine “ice-cream” didn’t sound too good. 😉

  9. April 22, 2010 9:29 am

My husband teases me b/c I stuff my ears with toilet paper every time I blow dry my hair.

  10. April 22, 2010 9:30 am

I love it! I honestly wonder if it bothers my neighbors because my blender is so loud haha

  11. April 22, 2010 9:35 am

I would not ever think to put that into a smoothie- but if you say it’s refreshing, I could be convinced!

I like an apple, celery and ginger mix myself!

  12. April 22, 2010 9:39 am

wow, i guess i didn’t realize how loud the vitamix is! that’s crazy…and i’m already partially deaf just from life in general 🙂

    what? what?

We wear headphones for most everything around here.. Hello riding lawn mower and leaf blower…aaaaand all saws for home improvement projects… Embrace your inner nerd!!… If it’s good enough for Pete Townshend, Peter Frampton and Phil Collins…They wish they had the chance…

but Heather, about that smoothie… :-\ i’m going to have to work up to the romaine.. LOVE Einstein…

  14. April 22, 2010 9:52 am

It is SO FUNNY that you bring up hearing problems with your vitamix now – JUST last week my dad suggested/ordered me to wear bright orange construction-style ear-plugs whilst I blend, because he fears for the safety of my ears 😦

    I must say, that thing is l o u d.
But I do want to be able to hear in 5 years.

  15. April 22, 2010 9:53 am

girl, if u gotta wear headphones when blending… im definitely gonna believe u when u say its LOUD! haha 🙂 its like ur at a construction site when ur blending lol xo

  16. April 22, 2010 9:57 am

    Happy Earth Day, my friend!

  17. April 22, 2010 10:04 am

I was just wondering which model of vitamix you have that’s so loud? I have one and I don’t see it hurting my ears too much… actually I think it’s quieter than my food processor! But maybe my ears are just screwed haha.

  18. April 22, 2010 10:08 am

Oh man – too cute and funny…i really needed that girl – thanks for putting a little smile on my face when sorely needed.

  19. April 22, 2010 10:12 am

Rosa, I’ve got an older 5000 model. However, my MIL owns a new 5200 model, and I noticed it’s quieter. Someday, I’ll have to upgrade, but until then it’s headphones. Plus, I blend a lot of ice in smoothies and ice-creams, etc. That’s when things get really loud!

TP is NOT good to put in your ears!!!! I have seen people with TP in their ears that has been there for months and they didn’t know it. Use soft foam earplugs.

  21. April 22, 2010 10:16 am

Happy Earth Day! Its kind of nice to hear that the King of Blenders is so loud. Mine (not the king of blenders) is really loud also and it always makes me nervous. 🙂

  22. April 22, 2010 10:21 am

That is too cute, haha. Happy Earth Day!

  23. April 22, 2010 10:34 am

LOL – Einstein is TOO FUNNY! 🙂 Patiently waiting! We have blinds that hang off the back door, and our pups will go and knock them around to get our attention! Dogs really are the bests! 🙂

  24. April 22, 2010 10:44 am

I love that you wear the headphones! It’s too cute and functional. What more could one ask for?

  25. April 22, 2010 10:47 am

Oh yeah and that burnt squash is posted 😉 haha.

  26. April 22, 2010 11:09 am

good idea…i could use headphones to block out the whining cats….

  27. April 22, 2010 11:18 am

Haha, your picture gave me a good laugh. Good for making breakfast with screaming kids too I bet haha.

haha I need some of those headphones! My parents call my vita “The jet engine”

  29. April 22, 2010 11:34 am

Very smart to wear those headphones. I need to start doing the same thing with my food processor when I make nut butter. Loud as heck.

And Einstein is so cute. Our dogs just jump up and down like they are on a trampoline.

  30. April 22, 2010 11:49 am

Carolyn, Oh how you make me smile. Try the romaine naner combo. The banana really cuts down on the greenness, and the romaine gives it a nice kick!

  31. April 22, 2010 11:50 am

I love using romaine in smoothies. It tastes a lot more refreshing than spinach. My dad has been doing it for years….

  32. April 22, 2010 12:02 pm

I use my Vita-Mix at the very least once a day as well. maybe some earplugs are in order…

  33. April 22, 2010 12:07 pm

I don’t have a vitamix (yet) but my blender is so loud! I need earplugs too.
    Happy Earth Day!!

The smoothie looks refreshing in celebration of Earth Day! YUM! My food processor is noise enough and I use it all the time. I wish I had a vita mix to make more noise! Enjoy your day Heather!

  36. April 22, 2010 1:12 pm

Such a great idea! Making that banana softserve really does cause a ruckus. 🙂

  37. April 22, 2010 1:17 pm

Just listened to your podcast with Meghan Telpner. Great interview!

  38. April 22, 2010 1:20 pm

I’ve never noticed my vitamix being that loud. maybe I am too smitten to notice its faults?

  39. April 22, 2010 1:26 pm

Katie, The newer versions are quieter. I have an older 5000 model. 🙂

  40. April 22, 2010 2:43 pm

THAT is the best thing EVER! I love it! You guys are so, so funny.

But seriously, it’s a good idea!

  41. April 22, 2010 3:09 pm

ROmaine and banana? gotta try it!!! i’ve been drinking my green-tea monster (green tea, spinach and vanilla protein powder) but i definetely need something different! but romaine won’t make my smoothie too watery?
by the wy you look too cute with the headphones!

Mmm green smoothie! Yeah, the VM is a bit loud. Can’t use it in the mornings or it will wake the roomie.

  43. April 22, 2010 3:19 pm

Sounds so light and refreshing! I always use spinach in my smoothies but never think about romaine, great idea.

  44. April 22, 2010 3:20 pm

Oh crack me up…that is hilarious!! 🙂

  45. April 22, 2010 3:53 pm

  47. April 22, 2010 4:43 pm

I’m getting me a pair of headphones like that so I can read in the same house as my kids.

  48. April 22, 2010 5:01 pm

I love how Einstein presses his nose to the door when he wants to go out. That made me laugh!
And your stroganoff from yesterday looks awesome!!
I know I haven’t commented in a while-I’ve been recovering from a combination of over training and ridiculous allergies. I’m coming along. I feel better today finally.
Headphones eh? I’ve never used a Vita-Mix but I’m sure you’re on the right track with those bad boys!

  49. April 22, 2010 5:08 pm

Green juice is so yummy! I think i’ll make some =D

  50. April 22, 2010 5:12 pm

seriously good thinking with the headphones!
I was reading about hearing damage the other day and only then did it occur to me how loud the Vita and FP really are! and like you they get used mutiple times during the day. I already have some hearing loss so thank you for inspiring me to use my earplugs in the kitchen now.
That smoothie is really clean! Try as I may I do not like romaine in my smoothies 😦 maybe I was just missing the cocoa =)
Love Einstein’s name and he’s super cute standing with his nose stuck to the door.

Lola, My smoothie wasn’t super thick, but I wouldn’t consider it watery. A frozen banana would thicken it up even more. Try it! 🙂

Einstein = clever dog. Bad joke, I know. Its late here, I’m half asleep. Btw, the Vitamix 5200 is still enough to make me jump out of my skin and make my ears buzz afterwards sometimes. A machine only to be used in my parent’s fully detached house- and not my teeny tiny flat. I hope you celebrate Earth Day in style! (Is Earth Day a global celebration, or just a North American one? I suspect everyone is too wrapped up in the elections over here in England to even notice the blossom has come out 😉 )

  55. April 22, 2010 6:42 pm

    Love the headphones – sooo se-xy! 🙂

I have never thought to put a whole head of romaine in a smoothie, but it does have a nice sweetness to it – I’m going to try this. Thanks!

  56. April 22, 2010 7:25 pm

    Hehe, Heather~ At your response!
I’m glad it’s quieter… your post made me thought I was going deaf or something! Lol. (Of course I would still not call it ‘quiet’).

  57. April 22, 2010 7:38 pm

Laura, Hmm, not sure. I figured it was global, but maybe not.

  58. April 22, 2010 8:50 pm

I cover my ears with my hands but sometimes the machine dances down the countertop so headphones would be key 🙂

do you ever have problems with your hard fruit getting stuck under your VITA-blade??
every time i put frozen strawberries in with milk and protein powder, berries get stuck and it stops blending. it is getting rather annoying.

  60. April 22, 2010 9:15 pm

It’s not me who needs the earplugs, it’s my roommates! I get up at 4am for work most days and like to start them off with a green smoothie; therefore, I have to do my blending the night before so as not to face the wrath of the roomies when I get home! And they’re Vitamix devotees as well, so it just goes to show how freakin’ noisy the thing is if even those who love it can’t stand it!

  61. April 23, 2010 5:11 am

Maggie B, I always always always add my liquid first, and that seems to help.

  62. April 23, 2010 6:50 am

What an easy, refreshing recipe! I’ve been seeing these blenders all over the food blogging world, and I’m really thinking I need to get one.

  63. April 23, 2010 7:06 am

bahhhh…i should send you the earphones like i wear on the airboat. i’m sure you know what those look like from my field photos = AWESOME. haha…total fashion statement.

  64. April 23, 2010 8:37 am

Glad I’m not the only one. I have a cheapie pair of Harbor Freight Earmuffs by my Vitamix and hanging on my Dyson vacuum. Too many rock concerts caused an early ringing in my ears…I don’t want making my delicious smoothies to make it worse!!

  66. April 25, 2010 6:23 am

Hahaha I love you Heabs. This smoothie sounds surprisingly delicious too!

  67. April 25, 2010 9:48 am

Bahah! Einstein cracks me up!! That’s hilarious.

I don’t seem to be irritated by the v-mix. I have a hair dryier (spelled wrong) I call the Farrah machine- I have to do what Jenn does and put TP or earplugs in.

Hmm, romaine.?? My first thought was “I’d prefer to eat it in a salad and have it take 30 minutes for me to consume” but then I read another commenter (Graze with me perhaps?) who said it’s more refreshing that spinach. Hmmm. food for thought- I’ll give it a try! Thanks!
