My Pledge: Relaxing The Rules

Yesterday, I met up with Justine and her Little One for lunch at Kalamata’s.

Justine and Little One looked adorable as always. I was sporting my I’ve been working on the house all morning & haven’t showered look. πŸ™‚


Remember my Restaurant Rules post? Well, lately, I’ve been slacking on said rules and just going with the flow. Normally, I would have scanned the menu online and chosen some sort of veggie-centric option before even leaving the house. However, yesterday, I showed up to the restaurant, my eyes fell upon lamb gyro, and that’s what I ordered, along with a side of tabouleh salad.



I rarely order sandwiches when dining out because that usually involves bread. However, the lamb gyro was exactly what I wanted in that moment, and I’m so glad I ordered it. I did freak out when I forgot to ask for the Tzatzaki sauce on the side, and my pita arrived to the table practically drowning in the stuff. Oh well, I thought, you’re out with a good friend…enjoy the yummy warm pita bread drenched in sauce. In the end, I enjoyed it so much that I bought an entire bag of freshly baked pita to take home. Lamb used to freak me out as well. I remember once I bought some ground lamb and made half lamb/half bison crock-pot meatballs. I’d heard lamb was really good for you, and didn’t think twice about the fat or calorie content. I decided those were the best meatballs I had ever made, and afterwards, looked up the nutritional stats. Well, come to find out, ground lamb is definitely NOT lean. I freaked out and decided I would never buy it again. Although I’ve never had a problem eating copious amounts of nut butter or avocados, I was always freaked out a bit by animal fat. Well, not any longer. In my opinion, it’s good for us, and my body seems to like it. Plus, it tastes yummy. πŸ™‚

All this to say that I hope to continue to with enjoying more of the foods that I enjoy eating. Yes, I still plan to stay away from sugar for the most part, but when I crave steak, I’m going to eat it, and if I want a sandwich instead of a salad, then that’s what I’ll order. This is my pledge to myself.

    I pledged to enjoy a little more chocolate in my life!!

    I’ve never had lamb before but not really because of the fear of fat. I went to Ireland in high school and there were lamb dishes everywhere we went. But I just couldn’t bring myself to try it because all I saw in my head was cute little lambs that we saw driving through the Irish country.

    I pledged to make yoga/other core/flexibility workouts more part of my routine instead of just cardio. I am a runner and sometimes get stuck in the running rut and don’t do anything else.

    I have decided to be more open minded about food and make more healthy choices…not just lowfat choices. I am doing well so far, but this is a hard one for me! I have started adding things little by little and I already feel better. It may be mental, but I guess that helps too!

    I am happy for you that you are relaxing the rules a bit. I used to have a set of strict rules similar to yours and that is actually when I had the most problems with my weight. When I relaxed the rules and focused more on eating intuitively my eating issues subsided and weight regulated.

    I pledged to give up my quest for body perfection, and instead focus on body love! I always beat myself up for not meeting my own standard of what my body *should* look like. I need to realize that my body does amazing things for me, and I am the best version of myself!

    i cooked with lamb last month and used my george forman grill… i forgot to dump out the grease pan.. so when it cooled.. the fat hardened. it was disguisting. sorry everyone reading this! when i cook with bison theres hardly any fat.. but i know what u mean about lamb. very disheartening 😦

    I absolutely love lamb! At Easter we ate lamb and my in-laws complained it was “too lamb-y”. Not sure what the hell that means. The ‘lamby-ness’ is what makes it delicious (otherwise might as well just eat another chicken breast)

    I love your attitude towards eating — very refreshing in a world where too many women are being too restrictive.

    I am glad that you did that post. I went to CPK and had a delicious pizza. I was starving and finished the entire thing. Normally I would feel guilty about eating all that food, but my body needed it and I enjoyed every bite. I need to listen to my body more and worry a little less.

    Sometimes you just have to get the good stuff. Sounds like it was what your body needed! Just like you do well with lots of saturated fat, I do well with lots of carbs. I don’t function well on a lo carb diet at all.

    I pledge to get done with losing this last 10 lbs and then get on with my life and get training for a full marathon.

    I pledged to eat more organic foods. I study environmental science and see first hand what all those chemicals/pesticides are doing to our environment (and our bodies) so with summer and farmers markets coming I will def be stocking up!

    I know I am also a bit hard on myself for my eating habits sometimes. You just gotta go with the flow (and be careful if “the flow” gets to be a bit to heavy on the sugar.)

    I’m so happy to read this post, and happy for you! I am working on the same thing, listening to what my body wants and being able to tell when I’m full or am not hungry in the first place. Of course, I always try to make healthy choices within those parameters πŸ™‚ I don’t like definite rules about food, except to eat healthy!

    way to go for relaxing your rules when eating out! i definitely have them too, and i know they can be helpful, but sometimes you just have to let go and enjoy the moment with friends and family. πŸ™‚

    i have a problem with binge eating, especially with trigger foods like cereal and chips, so i pledged to stop bingeing and eat intuitively.

    Ohhhh… have you ever been to Greece in your travels Heather? I have never, ever had gyros and souvlaki like they make in Athens- seriously, there was a camera crew for a travel programme at the restaurant I was at its so famous… you and CD should go if you can! I’m just stunned that some cafes in America serve wholemeal pitas! Good for you for following your gut (he he;) ) My pledge is to start LIKING tea or coffee and get off the Pepsi Max that is slowly but surely decimating my teeth… oh, and try to find something that relaxes me (no mean feat I tell you!)

    good for you Heather…I think the worst thing we can do is deprive ourselves. It ends up being so silly sometimes. I’m trying to get better about eating out. I used to be so insane about it that I would be the only one who wouldn’t be eating at the table…I would eat before or after (at home). It’s just crazy…I want to enjoy meals out with people and who cares if it’s not ‘ideal’ once in a while right? πŸ˜›

    I pledge to up my workouts to 6 times a week so that I can be more healthy, not so I can look better.

    As of recent, I find myself focusing more on working out to look good than working out to be healthier. Not that there is anything wrong with wanting to look good, but I find my motivation wanes more easily when I’m focused on appearance rather than health. Health is what it’s all about anyway, right?!

    I pledge to listen to my body more. I’ve been doing a better job of it lately but I still think there is room to improve. When it needs rest I am going to give it to it. When it wants healthy food I’m going to give it to it and even if it doesn’t want healthy food I’ll just go with it. Life is so much better that way.

    HEAB!! Great idea…. here’s my ling but I don’t have a wholefoods in my area (I know BUMMER)… so if I should happen to win… just draw the next person (but let me know I won cuz I never win anything and just winning is way cool! hehe)

    I’ve actually been doing my pledge since the beginning of the year and loving it! I enjoy making things from scratch and experimenting with spices… ie. I found out I ADORE hot curry.. and did you know hot curry on sweet potatoes is FABULOUS?? Not kidding.. num num num

    I pledge to let my boyfriend cook me dinner without looking over his shoulder to be sure it’s what I would deem healthy. I’m such a control freak when it comes to how my food is prepared or what I’m eating and it’s just not necessary or mentally healthy to be that way ALL the time. He would be so happy if I just sat down and enjoyed what he made rather than me making a more “acceptable” dinner. I would feel good too because it would be a huge step towards relaxing some of my food rules and realizing that there are no negative consequences. I’m really going to do this before the week’s end!

    It is a good day around here IF I get my shower in before dinner…I run around town with that ” I just worked out, cleaned the house, ran errands and SO need a spa day look”. You on the other hand, look gorgeous as always!

    We already eat pretty well, although we splurge sometimes, but our weight is far too high still. So my pledge was to walk or workout at least 5 of 7 days every week!

    My pledge is to stop dieting and start putting my digestion first. Lots of times I want to not eat carbs, because carbs are “evil,” and I’ll eat nuts instead. BUT NUTS MAKE ME SICK!!! Why do I do this? Because I want a belly like the prepubescent girls on the front of Cosmo.

    No more nuts. Only nut butter. No more caffeine. No more alcohol. No more anything that makes me sick, even if it’s something that I love.

    That’s my pledge.

    Once again HEAB, you’ve read my mind!

    A college friend I hadn’t seen in 10 years was visiting LA, on the same night I had the extremely rare occasion of a Movie Premiere! My wife couldn’t go! My college gal pal and I dressed up, had a great time, and I felt like a swell. Unfortunately, we had skipped dinner and were in the middle of Hollywood Blvd, starved at 11pm on a school night. The organic granola bars I had brought along had worn off. Sigh. I’m showing my friend the tourist sights of Hollywood, and pointed out one of my pre-weight loss faves, Skooby’s hot dog stand.

    It was time for me to relax, and enjoy mindfully what I once did mindlessly.

    I pledged to eat intuitively and know it’s okay to indulge every now and then. I always feel incredibly guilty if I eat something I don’t consider “clean” or that has no nutritional benefit. I need to accept that I can eat dessert once in a blue moon and my entire body will not be destroyed by it. That’s an obsessive and harmful way of thinking. Maybe some day I can again enjoy a slice of chocolate cake and have no regrets. That’s what I hope for, anyways!

    I have been afraid of the sun for so long since I am fair skinned, and have always been an avid user of sunscreen. After hearing the debates back and forth about whether or not short amounts of unprotected time in the sun (15-20 minutes a day) is necessary to get vitamin D, I have decided to go for it! I think it is important to get your vitamin D levels up which will protect you against cancer and getting a little tan would be a nice side benefit.

    That meal looks fabulous…I would give up all rules for that, for sure! In fact, I have had to ease out of red meat restrictions when I’m at my Iraqi clients houses and definitely enjoyed some lamb!! Yum!

    I pledged to eat chocolate once a week. Weird pledge for someone who would normally say that they are not a chocolate person. For some reason, I’ve really gotten into lately after discovering the joys of dark chocolate. I know there is nothing wrong with a little piece, but I don’t think I need to indulge every day. I’d be just as satisfied with another piece of fruit. Plus too much sugar leaves me feeling lethargic.

    After reading The China Study, I could never eat animals again. I was already a contented vegetarian, but wow, this book opened my eyes to the harm that animal products do to our bodies – I especially loved the ‘diseases of affluence’ chapter. Check it out; so good!! I am lending copies to everyone I know πŸ™‚
