In Need of Some Sweet Love?

December 3, 2009

Dear Katie of Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Be Vegan, I have a kabocha squash with your name on it. Please email me your address and it’s on its way. Sincerely, Heather 🙂

As most of you know, I am not a fan of sugar. For any new readers, you can read about it here and here. My body simply does not process sugar, even the natural stuff. As soon as I eat it, it goes straight to my muffin top belly. When I lost weight, I practically lived on diet sodas, and I used to put 4 Splendas in my Venti iced coffee from Starbucks. FOUR. Blech, the thought of that now makes me sick. Anyway, over the last few years, I’ve cut out most artificial sweeteners from my life…most anyway. I still have a problem with this one, and then I went and bought this yummy concoction a few weeks ago. I won’t lie…it’s really good, especially in protein ice-cream. 😉

Anyway, I discovered stevia a few years ago and tried to love it since it’s an all natural zero calorie sweetener. However, most brands I tried had a bit of a funky aftertaste. After a while, I managed to acquire a taste for stevia and started using it in my coffee instead of Splenda, but I couldn’t handle it in much else. Over the years, various companies have managed to improve the taste, and so when NuNaturals offered to send me some samples of their stevia, I was more than happy to try them. Honestly, I think it’s the best tasting out there. I’m still a fan of the NOW brand liquid drops in my coffee, but NuNaturals makes my favorite powdered stevia. The company has been super generous with bloggers, and I’ve already done one giveaway of their products. However, when I contacted them about doing a 2nd giveaway in honor of HEAB’s birthday, they were more than happy to oblige. So, two random commenters on this post will each receive 1 box of powdered stevia packets along with some liquid vanilla stevia. Thanks NuNaturals!

What can you do with stevia you ask? Well, let me tell you…

You can make the following:

Vegan Nutella

Butternut Squash Ice-Cream

Kabocha Squash Pancakes

Raw Lemon-Miso Salad

I could go on and on, but instead, I’ll leave you with my latest stevia creation.

I made a batch of my Almond Butter Banana Nut Muffins using NuNaturals NuStevia Sweetener Baking Blend. Mmm….Happy Birthday HEAB!

I also did a review of NuNaturals before on my Blog.

Heather- I would LOVE to try the NuNaturals products. I too stay away from sugar because of how it affects my mind and body. However, the stevia I use doesn’t please the others that I feed. It’d be great to have a product that me, my roomie, and my man could enjoy. 🙂

eatmovelove, Not sure. The jury is still out on that one. Personally, I use stevia several times a day: in my coffee, rice protein powder, etc. I’ve tried rice protein powders without stevia…not very good.

I love stevia… when I can afford it on my student budget! 🙂 I just started reading your blog a few weeks ago, and I love it so far– I’ve been trying for a long time to eliminate the artificial sweeteners from my diet as well (along with processed foods in general), and I have to say it’s not always easy. Particularly since I work in an office with plates of free cookies laid out at all times– sometimes a stick of sugarfree gum or a sugarfree werthers’ original is the only thing that can keep my stress-trigger-sweet-tooth in check. Doesn’t it realize that those mass produced cookies don’t even taste good? Apparently not. 🙂 Anyway, great blog post!

It’s been about ten years since I’ve had stevia, and back then, you could only buy it at the one health food store we had in Charlotte. I remember that it was really expensive. I think that some of the new mainstream brands, though, are probably just as unhealthy…especially that one that mixes the stevia 50/50 with cane sugar. Seriously? Anyway, I’d totally love to try some stevia:)

I always get so giddy whenever you comment on my blog, Heather! 🙂 Definitely adds a bit of spark to my day. So, thank you.

I wish I was moving to Manitou Springs! I’m kind of pretending I am, when in actuality I’m just going to be on the very very very west side of Colorado Springs. Twelve minutes (according to mapquest :P) is close enough, right? I’m beyond thrilled about my location though. I personally think the westside is the best part of the springs, thanks to its proximity to Manitou and quirky vibe. 🙂

Anyway, this entry also made me happy. Over the summer you inspired me to slowly cut back on sugar (I actually found out I have a moderate intolerance to cane sugar!) and while I haven’t found the perfect brand of stevia with zero aftertaste, I’ve grown to like it. I’m actually drinking stevia-sweetened (no longer agave!) coffee now and I can honestly say I’m loving it. Whatever the case, I’ll definitely try out NuNaturals soon.

  77. December 3, 2009 11:15 am

Sugar causes a similar reaction in me, aspartame has been linked to some scary side effects, I thought xylitol might be okay until some, uh, stomach problems.

I only use NuNaturals – it’s the bomb. Happy Birthday HEAB! For my daughter’s first birthday, I gave her a cake to eat all by herself. What does one give a blog for her first birthday?

And speaking of Muffin Tops, check this out: – the breakfast of champions.

Do you have a stevia you like to bake with? I wanted to use some of my NuNaturals packets in some bread I made the other day. But i read that it wouldn’t react with the yeast to make it rise.

    Hi Heather
I like your baking skills. Sometimes I feel very confused by the blog world and by the media and people around me. Especially about how I probably don’t get enough protein. Sometimes at lunch or another meal I might have a lot of aduki beans with bread and butter, and salad heavy laden with nuts and seeds, and then a cookie treat on the side or two. Compared to others I see this is quite carbohydrate laden. How do you always seem to know what the best choices are?

  116. December 3, 2009 12:17 pm

I’ve been wanting to try stevia for awhile. I’ve heard it can have a strange aftertaste, which is one of the reasons why I don’t use artificial sweeteners (besides the fact that I don’t trust them). So thanks for the recommendation on which brand to choose. I look for this one the next time I’m at the store.

I’ve never really tried any of the sugar replacements at all. I’ve eaten a few things in the past with Splenda but I couldn’t get past the chemical taste. I just started using agave in my oatmeal last month instead of brown sugar. I’m interesting in trying stevia in baked items.
Have you tried any xylitol? I’ve heard it doesn’t have any after taste.

PS — Thanks for the oatbran intro… I’ve been eating oatmeal for years and took the plunge and I’m loving it! When you stir in cottage cheese and pumpkin in the last 2 minutes of cooking it gets so voluminous and delicious….

  140. December 3, 2009 1:42 pm

Danielle, Here is some info. on Erythritol – it’s a natural sugar alcohol. NuNaturals uses it in some of their products as well, but their powdered stevia packets don’t contain it. Although they do contain maltodextrin as a carrying agent.

  141. December 3, 2009 1:45 pm

Hanna M. The only side effects I’ve heard of are headaches, including migranes and stomach/GI distress. I’ve never heard of any serious adverse reactions to stevia myself.

A, I know what the best choices are for me. Everyone is different, and in my opinion, there is no perfect diet that will suit everyone. You just have to play around with different foods, and see what it is your body prefers. Some people seem to thrive on carbs while others prefer a diet higher in protein and fat. I eat what works for me, and even then I’m always switching things up, trying new ways of eating, etc. You simply have to find what works best for you.

    Well,I am messed up for sure 🙂 I eat ice cream and fruit all the time (even before bed)…sugar comas 🙂 Life is too short. My take on it :;

  217. December 3, 2009 8:31 pm

Melissa, Currently, I get most of my carbs from veggies (eat a lot of winter squash) and whole grain tortillas or oats. I don’t eat a lot of fruit – maybe one or two servings a day at the most. Back in my running days, I ate more carbs, usually in the form of tortilla chips and a lot of raw desserts made with dates.

So glad you found my blog. Best of luck with your trail race. Trail running was always my favorite. Nothing like a long run in the woods!

*Try try again *- that’s gets repeated often in my kitchen. Thanks for reading Stephanie. 🙂

Kathey, We are all different. If your diet makes you happy and it works for you, then stick with it. I eat ice-cream before bed too…well, my protein ice-cream anyway. 🙂

HEAB — I’m a new reader to your blog and have really been enjoying reading your posts! I was so excited at a local farmer’s market today to finally find kabocha squash — I think the farmer thought I was crazy and I can’t wait to try it! Did you know that there is also an orange kabocha squash? I also got one of those to try and will let you know how it goes.

I’d be interested in a stevia that doesn’t taste bitter. I tried truvia and hated it…I didn’t realize it would vary from brand to brand!

I can’t buy Stevia here in Seoul, I looked online yesterday but the only option was a bodycream! Won’t be putting that in my food!

Keen to try some, thanks for the comments on brand you like, I wouldn’t have know where to start.

Stevia! It’s the best mixed with cottage cheese and cocoa powder – wierd I know but SO good!

  229. December 3, 2009 9:13 pm

Liz, So exciting! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the kabocha. I have heard there is an orange variety. One of my friends told me it’s much better for pureeing. The green ones are better for kabocha fries. Enjoy and thanks for reading!

oh wow, i’ve never tried stevia before, but i would love to! i’ve been trying to cut back on sugar, but i always return…at least i do my best to stick with “healthy” sugary foods (if there can be such a thing, haha).

    Hi Heather!
I know I need to go cold-turkey on the sugar again.
Honestly, baking with stevia as a sugar substitute overhwelms me, I guess. It shouldn’t, though, right?
I baked some GF bread with agave last week…it was so pure and lovely!
Does agave spike blood sugar? Is that why you don’t use it?

Kabocha fries? Oh, bestill my heart. How do you make those.

  235. December 3, 2009 10:53 pm

PeonyJen, Yes, agave is mostly fructose…first it spikes my blood sugar and then goes straight to my belly. I always add a packet of stevia to the millet bread. Gives it just a little touch of sweet. Perfect mix of sweet/savory with the coconut oil and salt.

I would love to use the liquid on ein my coffee.

  237. December 3, 2009 10:56 pm

PeonyJen, For kabocha fries, I cut my kabocha in half, scoop out seeds, place face down, and then cut into thin strips. Roast in a 425 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes. That’s it…oh, and I never peel my squash. I always eat the skin. I’m lazy. 🙂

o gosh i’ve been dying to try stevia from all the great things i’ve heard on your blog and others. thanks for holding this wonderful giveaway! it really speaks to those of us who like you can’t handle sugar very well 🙂

  239. December 3, 2009 11:41 pm

I really like the NOW brand of powdered stevia. I just got a bottle of flavored liquid (English Toffee) and am not wild about it. Not sure how to use it…any ideas?

Oh, and I never peel my kabocha either. Except today I had to because the outside was a bit, um, wart-y. It didn’t taste as good. Sometimes laziness is a good thing!

Katie, I love the NOW drops in my coffee, and a friend of mine puts it in her oats every morning. I wasn’t a fan of it in my oats – I could taste the alcohol.
