Operation POM Covered Kindness

Morning! I got so much sleep last night which makes me so happy. The time change has still got me all out of whack. CD and I have been eating dinner earlier since it gets so dark, and then I’m ready for bed at like 7. Last night, I made it until about 8:45 PM and then crashed. My body loves sleep.

Did you know that November is National Pomegranate Month and that pomegranate season ends in just a few weeks? Therefore, I am trying to eat as many as I can. FYI, you can also freeze your POM arils. So stock up my friends!

Speaking of pomegranates, who would like to win a case of 5 POM Wonderful pomegranates, not the juice, but 5 actual pieces of fruit? Again, can I win my own giveaways? CD, you must enter this one! πŸ˜‰

Here is how the giveaway will work. In an effort to help Katie raise money for Operation Chocolate Covered Kindness, all you have to do is make one of her brilliant recipes and somehow incorporate a pomegranate. For instance, it could be something as easy as oat bran with Fudge Babies and POM arils.


Or something more like my breakfast this morning…


Raw chocolate pudding (avocado, cocoa powder, stevia) covered in cherry pomegranate Smashberry Jam. P.S. – Smashberry Jam is much better the next day!

You can use use any of the POM Wonderful products, whether it be their juice or the actual fruit. Once you’ve made your recipe, blog about it and send me the link. If you don’t have a blog, you can still enter. Simply send me a picture and description of your recipe, and I’ll blog about it. The recipe contest, open to U.S. residents only (sorry!), runs through Sunday, November 15th at midnight, and I’ll post the 2 winning recipes the following Tuesday. So, get creative, have fun, and let’s see how much money we can help Katie raise for The Enough Project!

    I just got 2 new pomegranates and am ready to use em up! I had no idea you could freeze the arils, that is very good to know πŸ™‚

    Every single day, when I count my blessings, you are at the top of the list. (Fudge babies are up there too ;))
    Truly, as you know, I was really scared when I started the charity drive that it was going to fizzle down to nothing by the end of the month and no one would remember to help. But you really saved the day, and for that I can never thank you enough. I can also never thank you enough for just being amazing, fun-loving you!

    P.S. Yes, dads are smart! But moms are even smarter! I’ve learned that Mom is always right :).

    P.P.S. Is there such a thing as dried pomegranates? I’m thinking Pom Babies!!!

    Pomegrante season is way too short. I need to go stock up before they start pulling them off shelves! I already have the fudge babies and oats, so now they’re all I need.

    I wish that pom seeds weren’t sooooo crunchy. I’m all about seeds but it’s just a week bit too much even for me. Do you think it stops me eating them, HECK NO!!? πŸ˜€

    Well, if I can’t dehydrate my own, maybe I should try throwing fresh ones in… or the juice…

    I’m so jealous of your digestion! Once, I tried to do the avocado in the oatmeal thing. I was burping it up all day.

    To answer CCK’s question, there ARE dried poms out there. A company called “Just Tomatoes” makes them. Sorry I don’t know how to link when commenting, but here’s the addy:

    They are kind of expensive, but also kind of awesome… esp for us synaesthetics out there who can’t handle the squishy-ness of fruit. Nothin’ beats a handful of dried razzies on oats with almond butter.

    Hi Heather, great minds think alike! I posted a version of Katie’s Fudge Babies today & her charity drive…I called mine Dark Choc Fudge Balls.

    And your idea for raw choc pudding…ah-hah, I have called that Vegan Choco Mousse when I’ve made it for my bloggie. Great minds think alike with the choc action πŸ™‚

    Pomegranates in general seem so labor intensive and I am no stranger to workin’ in the kitch but I dont buy them all that often just b/c they take me too long to get the arils out! I need to try again πŸ™‚

    Ok, so I scored at the grocery store and got a bag of SIX slightly overripe pomegranates for 1.75. I’ve never had them before and am loving it. I will DEFINITELY have to check out some recipes to use them up before they go bad. Thanks for the reminder! πŸ™‚

    i just had my first pomegranate of the season yesterday, and i forgot how completely unbelievable they are. more importantly: you can freeze the seeds!?!? this is going to change my life.

    Yum! Very ‘fresh’ pictures. Heather, (or anyone I guess!) – any suggestions on canned pumpkin?? I’ve got a few cans…planning on doing some baking of course! But I was also wondering if you can just eat it out of the can??? Is it from the ‘squash’ family? Good for you? The nutrition content looks good…is Pumpkin ‘sweet’-tasting? I’ve never had it.

    EatMoveLove, I love canned pumpkin, and yes, you can eat it straight from the can. It’s not as sweet as a sweet potato or some other winter squashed like butternut. However, it is very good for you – high in Vitamin A, pretty low-cal, some fiber, etc. My favorite ways to eat it:

    – Straight from the can with a spoon. – Stirred into a hot bowl of oats with cinnamon and perhaps a little sweetener – Pumpkin smoothies – had one today consisting of water, chia seeds, canned pumpkin, vanilla protein powder, and pumpkin pie spice. – Pumpkin sandwiches or wraps consisting of pumpkin, nut butter, and honey. Great with chicken as well. – Make your own pumpkin butter:

    Ohhhhh fun! I’ve got to go back and find out how exactly to get into a pomegranate… I bought one for 1$ yesterday (last week they were $2.69/pc so I passed)… now, I have something to do with it!

    Thanks Heather!! So many great ideas. I’m glad you said it’s not as sweet as a SwPotatoe or Butternut – I actually find these too be too sweet in a way!! I think Spaghetti Squash and zucchini (well, a summer squash) are my favorites πŸ™‚ I should make the seed butter…would save on some expenses…
