Van Gogh Oats

July 7, 2009

I’m fully caffeinated and ready to go, but before I head off to work, I wanted to say Good Morning. 🙂

Yesterday’s breakfast was quite the masterpiece if I do say so myself:

Like sands through the hourglass...

Who knew oat bran could be so colorful?

My bowl jar totally resembled some sort of arts & craft experiement gone wrong, but it sure tasted right.  Into my Hugh Jass serving dish of choice went some chia protein oat bran blended with steamed broccoli and served atop my remaining raw almond butter.  Exactly how I prefer my greens…NO GRASS included.

Speaking of ass grass, the winner of my Amazing Grass giveaway is April. Congrats!  Please email me with your address.

Yesterday, I received the most kind and generous package from one of my readers. Deb, CD and I LOVE YOU!

Some of the goods:

Check out the loot!

Check out the loot!

Raw cacao beans – the first thing I opened.  They are bitter and crunchy and my new favorite thing.  Expect some raw cacao lovin soon.  Also included was a bag of Brazil nut protein powder which I cannot wait to try in a smoothie, and a box of Salba seeds, a brand of white chia seeds. Deb, thanks again so much.

This morning’s breakast included another one of Deb’s treats:

Chocolate almond butter + bananas + oatgurt...I want more.

Chocolate almond butter + bananas + oatgurt...I want more.

Deb sent us a jar of her homemade chocolate almond butter, and it paired perfectly with my bowl of oatgurt and banana. Deb, one word my friend: patent! 🙂

OK, off to work I go.  Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Your breakfast yesterday looks deeeeeeeelish! Oh and I totally had oats + almond butter + a banana for breakfast yesterday. It was so filling that I couldn’t even eat it all. Have a great Tuesday girlfriend!

  2. July 7, 2009 7:35 am

Our morning bowls look extremely similar, except different colors. Umm…chocolate almond butter??? Recipe?

  3. July 7, 2009 7:41 am

GOOOOD MORNING!! Love your ass-free (not grass – that stuff tastes like ass or worse), colorful breakfast!

    Good luck at work!

  4. July 7, 2009 7:44 am

Pretty, pretty oat bran, but I think I like the chocolate AB and banana better? uh, huh I do.

  5. July 7, 2009 7:52 am

I’m interested to hear about the Brazil nuts powder…mainly because I can’t stand Brazil nuts. Seems like I am the only one though, I know my husband loves them. Whenever we buy trail or nut mixes I leave him all the Brazil nuts.

    Chocolate almond butter sounds amazing…yummy!

  6. July 7, 2009 8:00 am

What a pretty breakfast. I was going to say that it looks like a sand sculpture, but someone beat me too it. I went to the Alexandria Waterfront Festival a few weeks ago, and there was a sand sculpture booth. I prefer the oatmeal sculpture. You can’t eat the sand…

  16. July 7, 2009 8:40 am

Oooo I love the swirly colors of your breakfast! What a great package – raw cacao beans sound so good. I love the bitterness!

    Good luck at work!!

What a beautiful creation! Just be sure to stay away from your ears with sharp objects…

Just wanted to comment that I thought your posts on weight loss and sugar were very well written and maintained a perfect balance between subjectivity and objectivity ~ I found what you wrote very intriguing and I’m so happy that you are in tune with your body and know exactly what works for you, something I still really, really struggle with. You’re such a great role model for me and many others.

    Good Morning, sweet Heather!!

  19. July 7, 2009 9:03 am

The title of this post is very pleasing to the art historian in me. 🙂 I think I’m going to shorten the name of this creation from Van Gogh Oats to simply Van Goats. Hehehe, it sounds like Post-Impressionist livestock.

    Happy Tuesday.

The oatbran is really pretty with the swirls of green broccoli ;)–who would’ve thought that broccoli could make something pretty?

Oooh I have some white chia seeds that I adore! Lovely package you received there, I can’t wait to see what you do with those cacao beans. Hmmm, I’ve never heard of brazil nut protein powder before, sounds interesting :). Hope you enjoy all your goods, Heather, and good morning to you too!

  21. July 7, 2009 9:24 am

Wow. Your smoothie is like one of those carnival sand bottles (ya know… you pour the different color sand in and bottle it up). Nice.

Chocolate almond butter sounds delish. Where can I get this?!!!

Any difference between the different types of chia seeds?

  28. July 7, 2009 11:42 am

OOOH! I adore Brazil nuts! I eat them raw with raisins and they make a perfect snack.

Is the Brazil nut protein powder just ground Brazil nuts? Or is there more to them?

mmmm I need to make Brazil nut butter 🙂

  29. July 7, 2009 11:57 am

What an awesome package! I can’t wait to hear how the protein powder is!

  30. July 7, 2009 12:04 pm

I’m with ya – Amazing Grass is not for me. I bought two samples, tried one and never had another again. I like my greens like I like my men…RAW. Haha – that was a joke 🙂

  38. July 7, 2009 4:26 pm

    Hi Heather!

I came across your blog through Polly’s. You girls seems like such great people! I have to tell you, you both have totally inspired me. I am a runner, and I USED to love it. After a marathon and lots of other runs, it just hasn’t been the same. I read up on your gym/workout addiction, and it seems like I was writing that in your words. I went through a phase a couple months ago which last 3 months and I have not had a period since Dec. Two dr’s appts later they tell me amnorreheea, which I guessed. Anyways, after reading about how you stopped running, lifting, and cardio, and are just stinking to yoga & walking… I’m on the quest to see if my body will react to it in a good way. I have been doing yoga for 8 months now. I teach group fitness 2 days/wk, so it does however, make my workout schedule a bit challenging. But I’m going to make it work and I’m giving myself the month of July to stop running and just do yoga, teach, and walk and see how my body changes. A couple questions for your q&a…

Do you ever feel you are not as challenged? I’m nervous that since I will give up cardio/strength training that I’ll gain weight or lose my cardiovascular health.

How did you learn what to eat? I sometimes get so confused sometimes, but usually try and combine a carb, protein, & fat, and try not to get too much fruit but not too much fat… it can be overwhelming. How did you learn to balance I guess I should ask. Ok this is really long… Thanks and Thank you for your blog… p.s. I love nashville! I have some photographer friends down there. (I’m a photographer, who loves yoga and eating healthy!)

maybe you missed recent discussions on food combing, but broccoli, chia, oats, almond butter….how could you desecrate a vitamix with this? im with you on the ass grass, but i think that combo for me would be a close second, maybe first :p
and that is why God has all honored us all with that unique glorious instrument he called the tongue as weird as it may look :p
i will admit, it was quite pretty.

ps: i do hope you picked up on the extreme, heavy, playful sarcasm, have a wonderful day!

  42. July 7, 2009 5:20 pm

chocolate almond butter sounds delicious. especially paired with banana. I think i need to revisit banana + oats tomorrow morning for breakfast.

  46. July 7, 2009 5:38 pm

yummm, chocolate almond butter?!?! is it sweetened at all or just coaco added to almond butter? your ‘sand art’ bottle looks like what we have our seniors make in arts & crafts at work!! looks yum though 🙂

If only I was business-minded- sounds like I could make a fortune from my chocolate almond butter! 🙂 Well, it really is dead easy and a total cheat: Emerald Cocoa almonds (buy at Target) (it’s sweetened with sucralose- many of you don’t like that) + Vitamix = Heaven on earth. Then for more heaven, chop up some more of those same almonds and stir them in for a crunchy version.

told Heabs to make a healthier version to TRY with cacao nibs and almonds and stevia, or perhaps organic cocoa or carob (yum!!) powder, almonds and stevia. I haven’t tried these yet, but I will!! I’ll definitely get to experimenting with hazelnuts (hello home-made nutella!) and pecans with the cacao. I seriously have no room in the fridge for another jar. I think I have at least a dozen nut butters in active use right now! 🙂 Yes, brazil “protein” is just ground brazil nuts- mostly fats and not much protein to be honest. And I’m totally confused about whether chia=salba or if they are cousins!!

whoops, have to eat my words- there seems to be 9 g of protein in 2 T of the brazil powder- woo hoo! Vegan too. 🙂
