Sun Warrior Protein Test #2

Yoga was not easy this morning.  It was another sloooow class full of long holds, much more challenging for me than a fast paced flow class.  We also did some deep stretching at the end.  Wow, do my hips feel open.  Good stuff!

I drove home dreaming of oat bran.

I wanted to see how my Sun Warrior vanilla rice protein would taste in oats.  I had high hopes after my protein pancake success.  This bowl contained my usual green recipe with one minor change.  On my stove-top, I cooked 1/2 cup oat bran & 1/2 cup wheat bran with 1 3/4 cups water and a pinch of salt.  After simmering for about 2 minutes, I dumped it all in my Vita-Mix with 1 handful of frozen spinach, 1 scoop of rice protein, and a dash of cinnamon. Instead of my usual frozen avocado, I added a banana.  The final product was definitely not as thick and creamy, but for those of you still scared of green oats, the banana completely masked any spinach taste. My thoughts on the protein powder: Sun Warrior is by far the best rice protein I’ve ever tasted.  It blends well, but it still has a bit of a chalky taste.  For those of you that have asked, I prefer the taste of Jay Robb’s whey protein. However, if you are looking for a vegan soy-free protein powder, then I would highly recommend Sun Warrior.  Again, listen to VeggieGirl! 🙂

Tonight is date night, meaning dinner out plus Lost when we get home.  So excited…and all I’m saying is that if Chris suggests fro-yo after dinner, I’m not turning him down.  CD, are you reading?  You know I’ll ignore dairy-free month for yogurt with you any day. 🙂

    And that cashew almond butter….yumm!! Is this the one you make urself?? I am a fan of both cashew butter and almond butter – the combo sounds divine!

    i’m thinking of using spinach in my oatbran tomorrow – i’m kind of scared! how much do you see as a “handful”? i’ll be using just 1/2cup oatbran, but i will be using banana too so hopefully i don’t need to be so scared?! not that i don’t love spinach, i adore it!!

    i really liked your quotation on the glamor website. i totally agree- if i ever feel bad about myself, i focus on how blessed i am to have a body that is strong enough to do something like running. even if i can’t pump out 5 minute miles or do ultramarathons, i still have legs, lungs and a heart strong enough to keep me going for enough time to appreciate it!

    Go for the spinach. I promise you can’t really taste it. If you do, add a banana. Bananas always make it better. 🙂

    Don’t be scared. The trick is blending well as I could not handle green chunks of veggies floating in my oats! I probably grab about a cup of loosely packed spinach, but I use 1/2 cup oat bran with 1/2 cup wheat bran. Start out small – maybe 1/4 to 1/2 cup of greens. I promise the banana will mask any spinach taste. Let me know how it turns out and if you like it.

    So glad you got your coupon. You already tried the Coconut milk beverage and yogurt, right? I LOVED all of the ice-creams. Every flavor was delicious! Honestly, I think my favorite combo was my oat bran a la mode (oat bran with vanilla coconut milk ice-cream). What a treat. The mini ice-cream sammies were good too as well as the mini coconut almond bars. I was not a huge fan of the banana split ice-cream sandwiches. The vanilla ones were better. Basically, get any of the ice-cream products. All winners. The yogurt was too runny and sweet for me, and the beverage didn’t have enough coconut flavor for my taste. Enjoy! 🙂

    I made your oat/wheat bran mix and it was amazing, not to mention CHEAP! It literally cost me 39 cents for 1/2 a pound of wheat bran in the bulk bin!

    cashew almond butter! sounds terrific. I’ve never ever tried almond butter before, because it’s so expensive, but after reading your blog I whipped up a batch of almond butter for myself. So fast, simple, and CHEAPer!I made mine a bit differently, though. I prefer a wetter, creamier consistency so I ground my almonds with almond butter.
    I just absolutely am in love with the greenness of your oat bran bowl.

    From a fellow oat bran lover: add the water and oat bran in a bowl the night before. Then the cooking time is reduced, and the bran is hydrated, meaning that it won’t dehydrate you when eaten (less brick feeling, which I personally find a bit too much). Fiber + water = belly <3!

    Just wanted to share it in case you haven’t tried! 🙂

    Love the oats! Thanks for the thorough review of Sun Warrior, once again. I’ve never tried anything but whey and egg white protein, so I think it would be interesting to sample. We’ll have to see!

    Spelt bread + cashew butter in a jar? Yes, please! I still have not tried cashew butter even though cashews are my favorite nuts. I need to get on that!

    Uh oh! Today I bought Jay Robb’s egg white protein because for some reason I thought you used that one! On second thought, maybe that was Miss Bender. Have you tried the egg white protein or just the whey from Mr Robb?

    I have tried the Jay Robb egg white protein. It’s okay in smoothies mixed with fruit, but it taste a bit funky on it’s own with just water or milk. If definitely DOES NOT work well in my protein pancake recipe. The whey is by far my favorite. Erica (Itzy’s Kitchen) is a fan of the egg white. Let me know what you think of it.
